For a family photo have everyone wear something that is the same color. For instance all the men can wear a red tie or vest, all the women can wear a red bow, or hat, or red beads...etc. Having something small that is similar ties everyone together.
I like the same colors, but it freaks me out when it's the same shirt. For example, if the whole family is wearing red polo shirts...not only does it look creepy but it seems unnatrual. Wear the same color with different looks that show off your personalities :)
